You know that prompt you keep typing over and over? The one where you explain your business, your tone, and exactly what you need — every single time you open ChatGPT?

What if you only had to do that once?

That’s what GPTs are. And most business owners have no idea this feature exists.

Word of the Day: GPT

GPT stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer” — but forget the fancy name. What matters is this: GPTs are custom AI assistants you can create (or use) inside ChatGPT that are pre-programmed for a specific task.

Think of regular ChatGPT like a Swiss Army knife — it can do a lot of things pretty well. A custom GPT is like having a dedicated tool built just for one job, and it does that job really, really well.

Important note: This is a ChatGPT-specific feature (from OpenAI). If you primarily use Claude, Gemini, or other AI tools, this won’t apply — but it’s worth knowing about if you have a ChatGPT account.

Two Ways to Use GPTs

1. Explore GPTs (Use What Others Built)

Click “Explore GPTs” in ChatGPT’s sidebar and you’ll find thousands of pre-built tools organized by category:

  • Writing — Blog posts, copywriting, emails

  • Productivity — Task management, summaries, templates

  • Research — Academic papers, data analysis

  • Programming — Code help, debugging, documentation

  • Education — Tutoring, lesson plans, flashcards

  • DALL·E — Image generation tools

  • Lifestyle — Travel planning, recipes, fitness

Popular GPTs right now:

  • Canva — Design presentations, logos, social posts

  • Write For Me — Tailored content with precise word counts

  • Scholar GPT — Search 200M+ academic resources

  • Image Generator — Create AI images with simple prompts

  • Video Summarizer — Get key points from YouTube videos

The best part? You can start using any of these immediately — just click and chat.

2. Create GPT (Build Your Own)

Here’s where it gets powerful for business owners.

You can build your own custom GPT in minutes — no coding required. Just:

  1. Click “Explore GPTs” → “Create”

  2. Give it a name and description

  3. Paste your instructions (the prompt that tells it what to do)

  4. Test it

  5. Share it with your team or make it public

I just built a Custom Logo Generator in about 60 seconds. It asks three simple questions — your business name, logo size, and style preferences — then generates logo concepts automatically.

  4. Social Media Writer — Generates posts in your brand voice

  5. Email Response Helper — Drafts professional replies to common inquiries

The magic is in the prompt. A well-written prompt turns ChatGPT into a specialist that knows your business, your tone, and exactly how you want things done. Need help creating the prompt? Read our post on creating the “Perfect Prompt”.

Who Can Use GPTs?

Free ChatGPT users: Can USE custom GPTs from the GPT Store (with limits)

ChatGPT Plus ($20/month): Can USE and CREATE custom GPTs

If you’re serious about using AI in your business, PLUS is worth it just for the ability to build your own tools.

The Bottom Line

Stop re-typing the same prompts over and over. Build a GPT once, and it works forever.

Try it: Head to ChatGPT → Explore GPTs → and either find one that fits your needs or click “Create” and build something custom.

Let me know what you build. I’d love to feature reader-created GPTs in a future issue.
