OpenAI's biggest day ever, and it's not vaporware. At DevDay 2026, OpenAI shipped more than 20 announcements, and for once, most of them are things a small business owner can use this week. Dots are always-on agents built into Business Premium that learn your priorities and handle recurring work without being re-prompted every time. Think of them like a junior employee who reads your inbox in the background and handles the routine stuff before you wake up. ChatGPT Space is a new collaboration layer with AI-editable shared pages and scheduled data refreshes, which is a real threat to lightweight project tools you might already be paying for. GPT-6.1 Sol is the headline number: near-flagship intelligence at one-fifth the standard token price. If you or your developer has been holding off on building anything because API costs didn't pencil out, that math just changed. Plugin Extensions let developers drop sidebar experiences right inside ChatGPT, and Private Intelligence adds zero-data-retention processing for anyone whose business handles sensitive information. That last one is worth paying attention to if you're in healthcare, legal, or finance and have been nervous about what goes into the model. The short version: OpenAI had a day, and this wasn't just announcements for Fortune 500 teams.
A quiet API change that will silently break your Claude workflows. Anthropic published a migration guide for Sonnet 5.5 this week and buried inside it is a breaking change you need to know about. The setting that used to be called "thinking disabled" is now called "between_tools." If your code or your developer's code still uses the old name, API calls return an error, not a warning. It fails. On top of that, the default effort level in the API is now high, and Anthropic actually recommends you start at medium for agentic tasks and low or medium for chat. Why? Because at those lower settings, Sonnet 5.5 still outperforms Sonnet 5's best benchmark scores and costs roughly one-tenth as much per task. That's the kind of cost-per-task improvement that changes whether AI features make sense in your product at all. If you're not a developer, forward this to whoever manages your AI integrations and ask them to check.
Set a calendar reminder for October 11 right now. Google AI Studio is switching all Gemini API accounts from postpay to prepay, and the deadline is October 12, 2026. If you don't manually switch your billing and load at least $5 before that date, every single API request fails automatically. No grace period mentioned. No soft cutover. If you have a chatbot, a workflow, a custom app, or anything else running on the Gemini API, this is a drop-everything item. The carrot is $10 in bonus credits for early switchers, applied within six weeks. The stick is an immediate outage. Go handle it.
