SmartOwner Special Alert: Why You Should Buy That Computer or Phone NOW
Buy That Computer Now. Seriously.
You’ve probably noticed AI is everywhere lately. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, these tools are changing how we work. But here’s something most people don’t realize: AI doesn’t run on magic. It runs on physical hardware. Massive data centers filled with specialized computer chips. And those chips need one critical ingredient to work — memory (called RAM).
Here’s the problem: OpenAI just signed deals with Samsung and SK Hynix (two of the three companies that make almost all the world’s memory) to lock up 40% of global memory production for their AI data centers. They’re not buying finished products off the shelf — they’re buying the raw materials before they even become computer chips. That memory used to go into your laptop, your phone, your smartwatch, your tablet. Now it’s going to AI instead. The RAM that cost $95 last summer now costs $560. And it’s still climbing.
This affects everything with a computer chip inside it. Your next laptop. Your next iPhone or Android. Your kid’s gaming console. Your smartwatch. Your car’s computer system. PC manufacturers are already announcing 15-20% price increases starting later this year. One major memory company (Micron) stopped selling to regular consumers entirely — AI companies pay so much more that everyday customers aren’t worth their time anymore. And this won’t get better until 2027 or 2028 at the earliest. Building new factories takes years and billions of dollars, and most of that future production is already promised to AI companies.
What should you do? If you’ve been thinking about buying a new computer, phone, tablet, or any major electronic — do it now. Don’t wait for holiday deals; they probably won’t exist for memory-dependent products. Also be aware: when word gets out, you’ll likely see scalpers buying up electronics at today’s prices to resell later at a markup (just like concert tickets). And unfortunately, when laptops and phones become significantly more valuable, theft increases too , keep that in mind when it comes to protecting your devices. The window to buy at “normal” prices is closing fast.
