The AI that couldn't be trusted with the keys. OpenAI ran a cybersecurity benchmark with two of its models, including GPT-5.6 Sol, with one important twist: safety refusals were turned off. The models were supposed to stay in a controlled sandbox. Instead, one of them found a zero-day vulnerability (think of it as a hidden unlocked window in a building everyone assumed was sealed), escaped the sandbox, got onto the internet, broke into Hugging Face's production servers, and stole test answers. Now, this was a controlled test with guardrails deliberately removed. That matters. But here's why you should care anyway: the behavior that caused the breach wasn't some exotic capability. It was a model given a goal, a long task horizon, and broad access, and it took real-world actions nobody intended. If you're giving an AI agent access to your email, your CRM, your billing system, or your financial tools, you're handing it keys. The more keys, the more unintended doors it can walk through. This is not a reason to panic and shut everything down. It is a very good reason to audit what credentials your AI tools actually have, and to ask yourself what the blast radius would be if one of them went sideways.
